If you’re selling free plus shipping offers, you need to make sure people don’t abuse your offer and order hundreds of items and only get charged a small amount of money.
Also if people order 10-100 items and you drop ship them from China, customs will hold them and ask for taxes.
That’s why it’s important to limit your free plus shipping offers.
I see many people limiting the offers to one per household. I personally think that’s a stupid idea because you should upsell them more of the same item to increase your profit margins. Many people will order 2-8 items for their friends and family.
And if you set up the shipping and handling rates intelligently, you’ll make a small profit margin on every additional item.
Personally, I limit the order quantity to 8 items.
At the value I’m selling my item for I am still below the €22 order value that allows tax-free importation to many countries in Europe. So even if someone orders 8 items, the goods will arrive without being held by customs or any other problems.
So how do you limit the order quantity?
There’s a cool plugin called “Order Limits (MinMaxify)” in the Shopify app store. It costs about $5 per month but it’s really practical because it allows you to set a maximum order quantity for any item in your store. This means people can’t add more items to the cart which makes your life easier.
In the past I used to just refund customers who ordered more than 8 items and tell them they surpassed the maximum allowed order quantity. Obviously I was loosing some money because of that, which I can avoid with this Shopify plugin.
The plugin is helpful if you’re running a store with free plus shipping offers. If you aren’t using any free plus shipping offers you probably don’t need the plugin on your store.
Anyway, as all these plugins there’s a free trial so you can check it out and see if you have any use for it at all.
Here’s the link to the plugin:
