Is Udemy Worth It? — Benefits and Downsides of Making Money on Udemy | TBS #059

Podcast

I got a question from Bonieky Lacerda yesterday and he asked me to share my thoughts on Udemy courses and making money with them.

I’ve had a Udemy course for the last two years.

Didn’t make me rich, but an extra $2,000-$3,000 passive income. But I don’t use it as my primary source of income. Now I’m much more focused on building other types of assets.

However, I think Udemy is becoming more and more unattractive with the new price policy. You’re very restricted in terms of your marketing when it comes to selling your information products online.

Udemy is controlling too much.

That’s the problem. What if you have a course that’s worth $2,000? You can’t sell it in the Udemy marketplace because the maximum price is $50.

Plus even if you don’t list your course in the public marketplace, by sending your traffic and audience over to Udemy to buy your course, you are building Udemy’s customer list rather than your own customer list. Very unattractive, considering that your customer list is one of the most valuable assets in your entire online business.

If you think long-term, self-hosting your course is a smarter move. You have full control over your marketing, pricing, video length and so forth. And you get to “keep” every customer you acquire yourself.

Make sure you don’t depend on external entities to control your business, or at least reduce it to the minimum.

You don’t want your primary source of income to be controlled by others. So if you use Udemy, use it as a source of passive income, because if Udemy someday stops working, you are screwed. You’ll be out of business over night.

As I said before: ONE is the most dangerous number in business.

Keep up the hustle!

Hope it helps. 😉

[…] I’ve used Udemy in the past and there’s too many restrictions. For example, your videos need to have a certain length. You can’t have videos longer than 20 minutes. But what if I want to do a one hour, in-depth walkthrough of one of my campaigns? Udemy won’t let me. […]
