Hustling While Being In University — The Story Of My First E-Commerce Business | TBS #232

Podcast

I built my first real business while being in university. For some reason I always knew that working as an employee wasn’t an option for me, even if I’d have a good education and great options.

Deep down I’ve always been an entrepreneurial type of person.

So I started learning about online marketing in my early twenties and used my university lectures and spare time to build my business.

I’d literally sit in class with a laptop and work on my business.

Although I had to show up and attend enough lectures to collect my Bologna points, I never paid any attention to what the professor said. Before exams, I’d just study for a couple of weeks and it was usually enough to get a good enough grade and not drop out of university.

The first business I ever built was an e-commerce store selling rap beats to artists. Licensing a beat cost around $19.99 and I promoted them by uploading them to YouTube and sharing on social media.

I built an email list of 10,000 artists and used traditional online marketing methods to make sales and follow up with leads.

And after a while I was making around $1,500 per month.

By staying in university and hustling like crazy to build my first business, I could “please” my parents while at the same time please my own desire for entrepreneurship. And once I started making some real money, I had “hard facts” to back up my future decisions.

So when I told everyone around me that I’m not going to work in a job or pursue an academic career, I already had money in my bank account to support my decision which gave me leverage.

I had already proven to myself and the world that I can make money on the Internet, so it was easier to abandon society’s plan for me.

If you are in a similar situation right now, then hustle on the side and build a business while being in school, university or in a job. And once you have proven to yourself that you can make it, only then quit.

Everyone thinks they’re entrepreneurs and want to quit prematurely.

But until you’ve made some actual money, until you have a real business and until you have enough income to survive on your own, quitting your job or university might be a stupid decision. Why not build your first business on the side and then pursue it full time?

It’s easy to say you’re an entrepreneur but it’s hard to do it and succeed. Make sure you do a reality-check every once in a while.
