I’ve received a question from Islam and he asked me if I could give some tips about Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
I have a few friends who are making passive income with Amazon KDP. They would publish their own kindle books and optimize everything for certain keywords.
What they did was they used the Amazon search engine to look for certain niches. In these niches there wasn’t much competition or information around.
The beauty of this business model is that Amazon KDP was quite new. You could easily rank for high volume keywords. Just like when Google started out it was easy to rank your website at the very top because few people were doing search engine optimization.
You could write a kindle book on how to overcome depression or a certain addiction. And because tens of thousands of people searched for that term every month and your book ranked at the top, you would get a ton of sales and make a lot of passive income from Amazon.
And then if you published a new book every week using this method, you could build multiple passive income streams on Amazon.
It’s a nice business model, I just see one downside.
Just like Google and YouTube are getting more saturated and difficult to rank, the same is happening with Amazon. Every search engine is highly profitable if you’re an early adopter. However, the longer you wait and the more time passes, the harder it gets to keep your high ranking or rank a new book for a new keyword.
That’s why I believe Amazon KDP is not a viable long-term business model. It’s a great way to make additional passive income, just make sure you’re building other income streams as well.
I don’t believe it’s a sustainable business model.
