Shopify Upsell Strategies — Upselling and Cross Selling In Shopify | TBS #138

Podcast

Upselling products is really easy when you have a tool like Click Funnels, but it’s a little bit more challenging with Shopify.

Here’s why.

Shopify was built with e-commerce people in mind. They wanted to build the best shopping cart software on the market and they did.

But it wasn’t build with customer value optimization in mind.

Click Funnels on the other hand is a horrible tool for e-commerce and it doesn’t have any shopping cart functionality, but it was built by Russel Brunson who’s a direct marketer and understood the benefits of upselling a product directly after the purchase.

You currently can’t use post-purchase one click upsells in Shopify. Shopify doesn’t allow it because of the way it was coded. There’s an app called “One Click Upsell” by Zippify, but it requires users to re-enter their credit card.

See, the beauty of Click Funnels is that customers don’t have to re-enter their credit card information. They can buy with one click.

However, there’s still ways you can upsell in Shopify.

1) Launch Products to your Customer List

You can simply export your customer list from Shopify and import it into Mailchimp (check if you’re allowed to do that in terms of spam laws in your country) once you start making a lot of sales.

And then just use email marketing to launch new products or run special sales and discount promotions to your buyer email list.

This is a more indirect and long-term method of upselling.

But it definitively works very well. It allows you to dramatically increase the lifetime value of your customers over time.

2) Promote To Your Facebook Fans

If you’re running Facebook ads to acquire new customers, it’s likely that you’ll get a ton of page likes as a natural side-effect of making sales. It’s not uncommon to get a few thousand likes per month.

Once you’ve got a Facebook page with a few thousand or tens of thousands of likes, you can start marketing to your own people.

Instead of going out there and selling to a “cold” crowd.

You’ll still have to pay something to run Facebook ads, but it’s going to cost you a lot less because your fans are already warmed up.

3) Boost Sales App

There’s an app called “Boost Sales” that allows you to create order bumps and pre-purchase upsells within Shopify. In most cases it’s not a good idea to use this app as it will suppress conversions.

But if your main source of sales comes from repeat customers and not from first-time customers, then this app is very powerful.

As soon as someone adds an item to the cart, they will see a little popup with related items that they can add to the cart. Kind of like what Amazon does with their “Customers who bought this item also bought…” message you see all over the Amazon website.

4) One Click Upsell by Zipify

If you want to give post-purchase upsells a try, take a look at the “One Click Upsell” app by Zipify. I’ve tested it, but quickly got rid of it because it only works in English and doesn’t allow translation.

Also you have little control over the layout and design.

And finally customers have to re-enter their credit card information which kills the whole purpose of a post-purchase upsell.

A big part of the magic comes from the one click part.
