Shopify Domain Name Tips — How To Choose A Good Domain Name | TBS #135

Podcast

At some point during the process of building your online business you will have to find a domain name that sounds great and is available.

Domain names are like the real estate of the internet.

Most of the good names are already taken or parked, so you have to be smart and strategic when looking for domain names. There are a few tips and tricks I want to share with you that I personally use.

Here are some basic rules:

1) Use .com or .net domains for the English speaking market and use local domains like .ca or .co.uk if you’re selling to local markets. Don’t go with fancy new domain endings that aren’t established yet.

A domain name needs to reek authority and trust. And the .com domain is by far the most trustworthy domain out there.

2) Keep your name short and sweet.

Most big and trustworthy brands and shops have short domain names. Most of them just use one word. It can be hard to find good one-word domain names these days as most of them are taken.

But go for the next best thing and look for two-word domain names. In some exceptions three-word domain names can also work.

Just make sure each word is short and punchy.

Let me give you an example:

The name bestdeals.com is a nice domain name for a general store or online business that doesn’t sell to a particular niche.

On the other hand, bestdealsdiscountstore.com is a shitty name because it’s too long. The longer a domain name is, the less trustworthy and authoritative it comes across.

3) Look for domains that sound good.

There’s a free tool called https://namevine.com that I like to use to find new brand names and domain names. You can type in a seed keyword and the tool will simply give you great sounding word combinations that are available to register right now.

This way you don’t have to be so creative and you don’t have to check individually for every idea to see if the domain is available.

Hope it helps!
