There’s a great tool called UpViral.com that you can use to create and run viral contests. I’ve used the tool for a product launch last year and we built a launch list of around 10,000 email subscribers total.

A big part of the traffic and emails we got came from viral sharing.

Here’s what we did:

We created an email opt-in form and on the thank you page we delivered our free gift. But we also included a widget and some copy explaining that people could get a second, more valuable free gift, if they referred three of their friends and got them to sign up.

So once we had seeded the initial traffic using Facebook ads and our email list, we created a huge “viral tail” of visitors and leads that were added to our launch list because of the viral contest. We just had to invest in the initial traffic. What came after was mostly organic traffic thanks to the referrals.

It’s hard to reach a 100% viral loop where you get one viral lead for every original lead. But we had a nice percentage of viral leads. The “viral tail” reach very far.

If you’re going to run a contest on Facebook or Instagram, why not build your email list at the same time and have it all automated? It might be something you want to try. Just make sure you have a valuable offer that people would be willing to share with their friends and relatives.
