Patience In Business — How To Balance Hard Work In Business With Patience | TBS #157

Podcast

I believe there’s two different phases you can be in your business. And this depends on how patient or “relaxed” you want to be about things, or how hard you should work to get results fast. There are times where patience in business can be good for you, and other times where is just plainly bad.

1) When You’re Broke (And Have No Business Or Job)

This is not the time to be patient my friend. We live on an economic planet, and if you have no money to pay your bills, if you can’t put food in your table and pay for a roof over your head, you are quite literally screwed. This is the time to work your face off every day.

Maybe you have some friends or family that can support you during these times, and that’s fine. But nevertheless you have to activate what Daymond John calls “The Power Of Broke” and work.

You can’t be patient because you don’t have that luxury.

Do whatever it takes to get a job, get a project, get new clients. Apply for jobs, cold call, cold email and sell like your life depends on it.

Because it does, no figure of speech here.

2) When Your Business Is Thriving

When your business is doing well and you have enough income to pay all your bills, pay for a roof over your head and maybe even save up something at the end of the month, things slightly change.

You should still keep yourself broke, even if things are going well.

Make money like you’re rich, but spend like you’re poor.

However, in this phase of your business you can shift your focus away from the instant necessity of results and money, and start taking on a long-term perspective and play the game because you love it.

When there’s no instant need for results, you can shift your focus onto your actions and the joy of building a brand and business.

Your basic needs are met. There’s no emergency. You have some money saved up, so patience can become a part of your life again in the sense that you can let go of the outcome and enjoy the ride.

Immerse yourself in mastery.

Find fulfilment in the process, in the practice, in the game itself.

You can still have big goals of course, but there’s no need to reach them instantly because your basic needs are met and you can now patiently work towards those goals by focusing on your actions.

The bottom line is that there’s a place for patience and impatience in business, and it strongly depends on your current situation.
