How To Reach Your Goals — Commit To Your Goals For The Right Reason | TBS #208

Podcast

Making decisions is probably one of the most important skills anyone can learn in life. If you make a real decision, there is no room for failure. Success becomes the only option and outcome.

Most people think they’re making decisions.

But they’re not.

Whenever you make a real decision and a fake decision you always know it deep down. Think about your last new year’s resolution.

Did you ever decide you’re going to stop smoking?

Or did you ever decide you’re going to the gym four days a week?

Well, those weren’t real decisions.

You said you would do those things but deep down you already knew that you would fizzle out, that you would quit and not follow through. Whenever we lie to ourselves some part deep down knows it. What you call a “decisions” is nothing else than a weak way of lying to yourself. You make yourself feel better in the moment by saying you’ll do something, and then when things get tough you make yourself feel better by quitting. You do what’s comfortable, lying to yourself.

The problem is that you haven’t flipped the switch.

Whenever you make a real decision there’s a certain fury to it.

There’s a moment where something clicks within you. It’s like an invisible switch gets flipped and you know deep down that you are going to do it. You eliminate any possibility of failure or quitting.

This usually only happens when the pain of failure or quitting is bigger than the pain of not reaching your goal. These moments usually come with an “enough is enough” statement and a deep motivation to stop compromising and living below what you’re really capable of.

If you’ve been bullshitting yourself with fake decisions in the past, knowing from the get go that you wouldn’t follow through, then try harder. Try, fail and recommit until you say enough is enough.

At some point you’ll be so frustrated with yourself that the pain of quitting and failing just gets bigger than the pain of following through.
