Free Plus Shipping On Shopify — Shopify Drop Shipping Marketing Tips | TBS #082

Podcast

So, should you use free plus shipping on Shopify? or discounted offers plus free shipping? That’s a question I get a lot in this Q&A series.

Here’s my thoughts.

I’d try free plus shipping offers for any items that have a product and shipping cost of less than $4. If you find items on AliExpress for that price, I’d strongly recommend trying a free plus shipping offer. It’s a great tool to adquire new customers. An offer where customers just have to pay the shipping price is seen as free, because your basically giving them the products.

If you charge $8-10 for shipping, you still have $2-4 margin for your customer acquisition costs and profit. I often pay as little as $1.50 to acquire a new customer, so basically if I have an item for let’s say $3 on AliExpress, I’m making $4-5 profit on every front-end sale.

Now if your product is more expensive than that, let’s say in the $5-20 range, you can’t use a free plus shipping offer as it won’t make any sense to charge $30 for shipping. It would be incongruent.

In that case, just give a discount and offer free shipping, it’s still a great offer and you can make a lot of profit in the front-end.

The bottom line:

Keep your product and shipping costs in mind to decide if you want to use a free plus shipping or a discount plus free shipping offer. And test both of them to see what works better in your market.

You need to break that first barrier of resistance that prospects have. It’s the most important part of salesmanship. You accomplish this by reducing the friction of the first sale. And by using these techniques you’re already a step ahead of your competition.

I hope this helps 😉

Hello ! Sorry for my english, I’m french. 🙂
I almost watched all your videos and now, my store is ready. The BIG problem is the free shipping.

I want to do both, free plus shipping and free shipping. I made the free plus shipping with the weight based rates and the free shipping with the price based rates.
The big problem is when a customer buy two products, 1 free plus shipping and 1 free shipping in the same order, my Shopify is offered to the client the choice between FREE SHIPPING and the delivery of the FREE PLUS SHIPPING.

So, a customer can take 5 products free plus shipping and 1 products free shipping, and he gets the free shipping for the 6 products… I’ve lost money because of that today. ^^

I tried to remove the free shipping in price based rates, it’s working with 2 products but not anymore with 1 products free shipping. 🙁

Can you tell me a method to avoid that, please ? Maybe an app in Shopify ?

    Thanks for your time,

    Florian.

      Hi Florian,

Thanks a lot for your comment 🙂 Hmmm, here’s what I do: I give my free plus shipping offers a certain weight like 0.5kg. All free shipping products you give the weight 0. And then in the shipping settings you set up the weight for 0.5kg = $9.99, 1kg = $12.99, 1.5kg = $14.99, 2kg = $16.99 and so forth. And the free shipping you set up by selecting “Free Shipping” for the weight “0”. Now both offers can exist together without interfering. For me it works. So then the customer pays the shipping and handling fee for the one product, and for the second product not. Hope it helps!
