No third party owns email as a media.

It’s essentially an independent form of media. Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat on the other hand are owned by third parties. The followers you have on those platforms are “owned” by the platforms and if they decide to discontinue doing business with you, then you’ll loose that following and won’t be able to market to them anymore.

If Facebook closes your account or disappears like Myspace did, your followers on Facebook and page likes are rendered meaningless.

So you have very little long-term control over these lists.

An email list on the other hand is an asset that can serve you for a very long time. Email as a form of communication isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and the list is 100% owned by you.

No other third party can claim the list or block your access to it, or somehow take it away from you, meaning you have full control.

So the old internet marketing saying is still rue:

“Always build your list”

Yes, you should also build your Snapchat following, Instagram following, Facebook following and Youtube subscribers. You just have to do all of it at the same time rather than just ffocusing on one.

Oh and in case you’re wondering, email marketing still works.

I recently ran an email marketing campaign to a list of 8,000 people. One single email got 750 clicks which is almost a 10% click-through rate. And the email resulted in a total revenue of over $7,000. Yes, that’s $7,000 from one single email to an 8,000 people email list.

You don’t need to have a huge list, however it needs to be targeted, relevant and it should be recent. Make sure you move people around and get them to re opt-in frequently to increase the recency factor.
